32. The Decameron (Giovanni Boccaccio)

To hit my target of 100 books this year, I would need to read 3.4 books a week consistently from now until the end of the year. This seems distinctly unlikely. I am therefore trying to remember the following lovely little poem by Edward Monkton as a sort of consolation:
"He knows not where he's going
For the ocean will decide -
It's not the destination...
...It's the glory of the ride"

27. Me Talk Pretty One Day (David Sedaris)
28. Gemma and Sisters (Noel Streatfeild)
29. See Under: Love (David Grossman)

The 100-book target is seeming increasingly out of reach :( I should have ideally read 50 books by now. The low number of books read in June can be attributed to the 'waste of time' that I spent rereading the St Clare's series by Enid Blyton (and rereads don't count towards this total, if you remember), and the fact that I have just started reading possibly the longest novel ever written (Proust's In Search of Lost Time). Quality, not quantity, friends.

That is ****ing weak. Compounded by my apparent inability to get on with Wuthering Heights, and the fact that I have sooooo very nearly (but not quite) finished Charlotte Brontë's Shirley.

update February 2010

# of books read in February: 4
Cumulative total: 9

1. The Blessing (Nancy Mitford)
2. The Plato Papers (Peter Ackroyd)
3. The Hours (Michael Cunningham)
4. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows)

9. The Man in the High Castle (Philip K Dick)

Average number of books per month: 4.5
% by male authors: 66%
% by female authors: 44%

Not doing too badly so far, though at an average rate of 4.5 books a month, I'll still only be on the same total as last year if I continue this way (optimal target would be 8 books a month).

Nevertheless, I do currently have three books on the go (two in English and one in French), so should still be able to make things pick up a bit if I put my back into it.
